Upton Hall has been home to most of Buffalo State College’s art and design programs since 1962. Heavy use of the building over the decades has resulted in the need for substantial renovation, including major upgrades to building systems. Visually expressing the program for arts and humanities in the facility was critical to the reimaging for the largest SUNY program for the Arts. The design team focused on creation of an “agora” or meeting place at the heart of the plan that is flanked by galleries, critique spaces and displays. Flynn Battaglia’s design work intended to create a state of the art teaching and learning environment while maintaining sustainability and working towards a LEED Gold rating.
