Flynn Battaglia Architects has been involved with the restoration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Park casino since 2013. Built in 1927, on the first floor the MLK Casino included locker rooms, dressing rooms, bathrooms, and a public space with a refreshment counter provided by the concessioner. The second level included a large open space with another refreshment counter. MLK Casino renovation and restoration has been split into several phases. The end product intends to be a functioning community space that will include renovated locker rooms, restrooms and refreshment counter and an event space on the second level. The first phase of this project, completed in 2014, involved the replacement of the roof, restoration of the historic windows, new historically-sensitive security grilles and identification and repair of masonry and concrete on the exterior of the building. The current phase of the project will include the addition of an elevator to make the second level accessible for future use as well as renovating the restrooms and locker rooms on the lower level.
