Flynn Battaglia Architects led a team of expert consultants through a complex series of programming and design scenarios for the redevelopment of this 12 acre urban renewal parcel located on the Buffalo River at the historic terminus of the Erie Canal. FBA developed a Master Plan for a nine acre subset of the parcel and led the design for the re-creation of the historic layout of the site, which was once the location of Buffalo's most storied waterfront neighborhood and commercial district before its demolition in the 1930s. The Erie Canal Harbor Master Plan was accepted by the public after a thorough public review process. Goals of the master plan included the inclusion of program and design recommendations to re-create the Erie Canal Harbor terminus as a vibrant central location for local citizens and visitors and sought to incorporate a restored portion of the Commercial Slip, several boat basins, a re-created Central Wharf, interpretive historic exhibits and a new site for the Buffalo and Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Museum. Canalside is now host to the popular summer concert series in Buffalo and numerous outdoor summer events.
